Recently, presidential candidate Rick Perry made misstatements not only about climate science — but the scientists behind the science. How should scientists respond to such distortions?
Robert Socolow of Princeton University (author of the famous “wedges”) explains how US politicians are questioning the scientific method:
“We must not underestimate the threat now looming. Another age of darkness could lie ahead. In what may someday be called the Science Wars, our opponents present science as dogma and construct a symmetric conflict: their dogma vs. our dogma.”
So much for science-based policy-making. It is not too difficult too predict that more scientific facts on the unsustainability of our economic model will be denied because they do not fit into the narrative of the establishment.
